De Gaulle was in charge of forming a new government and also became President of the Republic (1958-1969). He was a man of the right, had a genuine love of France, and is considered the first and most clearly "fascist" French. Became and still is a kind of national hero, and all Frenchmen, regardless of party remember him as the man who liberated France (Paris's main airport was named after his death). The only ones who have always had a grudge toward him are the so called "fascists" in France, because of the war of course, but also because de Gaulle had the "strange idea" to grant independence to Algeria (French colony until 1962, in fact) after a long war that lasted about 12 years. Intolerable for a nationalist!
These same characters, ranging from Marshal Petain to Jean-Marie Le Pen, the current leader of the "Front National" party French far-right and anti-European, have always been considered, at least by those who have a minimum value, a danger for France, and their leader has NEVER been part of the national government and above all NEVER a member of the French moderate right has established agreements with them (even if it could be convenient to rule).
